Paintings & Drawings

“It’s all about drawing”

Painting on the edge of drawing

Catalin Pislarus paintings are, as he says, “all about drawing”. They are about drawing and space, about drawing and its media, or, in another way: about lines and material. Catalin focusses both for several reasons. The line constitutes the drawing, even a field can only be drawn with thousands of lines. It shapes the specific aesthetics of drawing: thick and thin lines, gestural and exact lines, erased and over-drawn lines make a drawing work as a drawing.

This idea of drawing is not only realized on paper. Catalins paintings usually are sprayed on alu dibond panels or as in newer works on a ping-pong table. He even brings drawing to the tennis court by rearranging the tennis court line markers. In this selection of media and material Catalin crosses the tradition of minimal art for a second time. His paintings are not only minimalistic, they explore the aesthetics of industrial materials and “ready mades”.
